Pfaadt, Ethington combine for 10-inning shutout in 2-0 win over Union

JACKSON, Tenn. — Bellarmine University junior right-hander Brandon Pfaadt and senior right-hander Anthony Ethington won the pitchers' duel — or, more accurately, outlasted their counterparts from Union.

The Bellarmine duo combined to fire 10.0 scoreless innings, and the Knights scored two runs in the top half of the extra frame in securing their first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs at Fesmire Field.

Pfaadt tossed the first 6.0 shutout innings and allowed three hits and one walk with six strikeouts for Bellarmine (1-3). He struck out the side in the second and retired the final two batters in the sixth after Union (3-3) had placed a runner on third with one out.

Ethington (1-0) entered to start the seventh and went on to record the win. He whirled 4.0 shutout innings while allowing two hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Ethington fanned two in the ninth and retired the side in order in the 10th.

Bellarmine didn't capitalize on a golden scoring opportunity in the ninth as the Knights loaded the bases with no outs but could not plate a run. However, Bellarmine didn't miss its chance in the first extra frame against Cooper Bullough (0-1).

Freshman first baseman Noah Nelson led off the inning by reaching on an error, and junior utility Jacob Mulcahy singled through the left side. After a balk advanced the runners, junior left fielder Matt Higgins broke the scoreless deadlock with an RBI single to the opposite field. Senior catcher Chris Gambert followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center to make it 2-0, and Ethington sewed up the victory with a 1-2-3 bottom half.

Both teams collected five hits. Higgins went 3 for 4 for Bellarmine. Mulcahy and Nelson chipped in one hit each. Ryan Mets had an outstanding start for Union, striking out eight and yielding three hits in 6.0 scoreless innings. Logan Portis then struck out five and didn't allow a hit in 3.0 shutout innings.

The teams will conclude their three-game series with a 2 p.m. (ET) doubleheader Saturday.
