Knights get swept by Findlay in 2020 home opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Bellarmine softball made its 2020 home debut on Sunday, but the Knights had disappointing results in both games of their doubleheader with Findlay, falling 5-2 in game one and 7-3 in the tail end.

The visiting Oilers were able to stifle Bellarmine's offense for the most part, which is an accomplishment considering the Knights came into today's doubleheader averaging nearly eight runs a game.

In the first game, Findlay was simply more efficient on the offensive end, scoring five runs on seven hits and stranding just six baserunners.  The Knights made Findlay earn pretty much everything as the BU defense didn't commit an error all day.

At the plate, Bellarmine simply just couldn't string together hits when it needed them.  The Knights outhit the Oilers 8-7 but left 10 runners on base.

Findlay was ahead 4-0 by the time the Knights finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when they scored a lone run.  Hannah Webb led off with a single and took second on a passed ball. An Anna Greenwell single sent Webb to third, and she later scored on a wild pitch.

After the Oilers got that one one run back in the top of the seventh, the Knights made the final score 5-2 as Webb delivered the Knights' only RBI of the game when she singled home Grace Werner, who'd led off with a single.

Webb and Werner each collected two hits to lead Bellarmine in the opener.

In game two, the Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Alexis Hargrove and Shelby Kelly providing RBI base hits.

However, the long ball gave the lead to the Oilers in the top of the fourth as UF's Megan Fisher smacked a two-run homer and Lyndsey Seamon followed up with a solo shot.

Bellarmine pulled even in the bottom of the sixth when Sabrina Fussenegger came through a hot shot up the middle to plate Alyssa Brock, who was on base after she led off the inning with a single. The Knights ended the frame stranding two baserunners, again not getting the clutch hit at the right time.

The Oilers slammed the door shut on the Knights in the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits with Bellarmine issuing three bases on balls in the frame.  Bellarmine was retired in order to close the game.

Fussenegger and Brock had two hits apiece to account for four of Bellarmine's eight hits and pace the Knights at the plate.

Bellarmine slips to 3-7 on the season and moves on to play in a three-day event hosted by Southern Indiana Feb. 21-23.  The Knights will play two games each day during the "regional crossover" tourney.
