ROLLA, Mo.—The Bellarmine Knights turned in a wire-to-wire 83-70 victory over Missouri S&T on Thursday night at Gibson Arena in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game.
The Knights played well on both ends of the court, especially in the game's first 28 minutes when Bellarmine expanded the lead to as many as 28 points before coasting in for the 13-point win.
Twelve different players scored for Bellarmine, which shot 54.2 percent and held the Miners to just 45.6 percent.
Ben Weyer paced the Knights with 13 points with
Alex Cook and
Alec Pfriem chipping in 12 and 11 respectively.
"The number one thing is that we had three great days of practice and it translated into the game," said Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport. "We did a great job in terms of minutes played. Nobody played more than...23. We really, really played well. What you want right now is a healthy team and a team that's on an uptick, and we are."
Bellarmine (18-6, 11-6 GLVC) got a 3-pointer from Weyer just 22 seconds into the game, and the Knights never trailed. In the first half, Bellarmine was particularly effective, shooting 60 percent and holding Missouri S&T to just 30.3 percent as they took a 41-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Coming out of the break, the host Miners turned in a quick 5-0 spurt, but Bellarmine's
Parker Chitty drained a triple to halt the S&T run. After the team traded treys, Bellarmine unleashed an 18-1 run to essentially seal the game with a 62-34 advantage at the 12:27 mark.
Coming down the stretch, the Miners got red hot. In the final 5:01, S&T went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and made both 2-pointers while outscoring the Knights 21-9 to make the final margin 13.
Even with the late hot streak, the Miners made just 10 of 31 trifectas while the Knights were a solid eight of 19 from long range.
On the inside, Bellarmine was even better and held a 42-26 advantage in points in the paint and a 34-28 rebounding edge.
The contributions from the entire team showed up on the stat sheet beyond the scoring column for the Knights. Bellarmine totaled 22 assists on 32 made baskets with 12 different players supplying a helper with Chitty's four being a team high. Bellarmine's 42 rebounds came from 10 different players with
Pedro Bradshaw claiming a team-high eight boards.
Missouri S&T (5-18, 3-14 GLVC) placed four players in double figures with Jordan Newt, Yahmir Muhammad and Mitch Fairless pitching in 13 with Dulan Scott adding 12.
Bellarmine returns to action on Saturday when the Knights play their final regular season road game at 4:15 p.m. (3:15 p.m. CT) at Maryville.
