Women's basketball's winning streak snapped by Saints

ST. LOUIS — Maryville picked up Saturday right where it left off against UIndy, and that was very bad news for the Bellarmine University women's basketball team at Moloney Arena.

Bellarmine suffered its most lopsided loss of the season as the Saints built a 20-point lead after one quarter en route to a 93-70 victory over the Knights in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Junior guard Tasia Jeffries scored a team-high 16 points for Bellarmine (15-10, 10-8 GLVC), which saw its four-game winning streak snapped. All five starters for Maryville (15-10, 10-8) scored in double figures as the Saints delivered another eye-opening performance after thrashing UIndy — which, like Bellarmine, is in the upper tier of the GLVC standings — 91-62 on Thursday.

The first half, and particularly the opening quarter, was the story for Maryville. The Saints were up 10 less than four minutes into the contest and, by the time the first period ended, they had built a 28-8 lead.

The advantage swelled to 30 in the second quarter before Maryville went into halftime with a 51-23 lead. It didn't get any better in the third period as the Saints' lead ballooned to 37.

Mary Barton, the GLVC's leading scorer, posted a game-high 23 points with a game-best six assists. Abby Monis piled up 20 points and an astounding 18 rebounds. Jayda Jansen chipped in 18 points for Maryville, which shot 47.5 percent and had a 50-36 rebounding advantage including 21 offensive rebounds.

Junior forward Lauren Deel followed Jeffries with 12 points for Bellarmine, while junior guard Breia Torrens and freshman guard Ashlee Harris had 10 points apiece. Senior center Ally Mayhaus recorded three blocks, three assists and six rebounds. The Knights were just 2 for 17 from 3-point range.

Bellarmine closes the regular season with two games at home. The Knights host Southern Indiana at 5:45 p.m. (ET) Thursday before welcoming McKendree at 1 p.m. Saturday.
