No. 12/14 Hoyas deal 13-4 loss to Knights

WASHINGTON, DC—The Bellarmine lacrosse team dropped a 13-4 decision to the No. 12/14 Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday at Cooper Field on the Georgetown campus.

Again, the Knights got off to a slow start, trailing 7-0 before Brayden Brown got the Knights on the board with a man-up goal midway through the second quarter.  From there, the Knights were much more competitive, but the Bellarmine offense continued to have difficulty scoring on Hoya goalie Owen McElroy, who stopped 14 of 17 on target shots.

"Georgetown is a very good team and ranked in the top 15 for a reason," said Bellarmine Coach Andrew Whitley. "They won matchups against our offensive personnel, and when we were able to generate the shots we wanted, their goalie played great and bailed them out."

Georgetown (5-0) enjoyed advantages in virtually every statistic. The Hoyas outshot the Knights 43-31 including 27-19 on frame. Georgetown also owned a 43-25 ground ball advantage helped along by winning 15 of 21 faceoffs.

However, it was another statistic that disappointed Whitley the most. "The seven failed clears was frustrating because that had been an area of strength thus far in 2020," he said. "Four of those end up in the then net, and that can be crippling, particularly since we are coming off of a defensive stop."

Bellarmine's Ian Reilly got the start in goal for the Knights and put up a career-high 14 saves.  "Ian was a real steadying force for us today, and I was happy with the poise he displayed throughout the game," Whitley said.

Four different Knights registered goals with Brown, Blake Roshkowski, Luke Legnard and Landon Trout getting the scores.  Assists came from Legnard, Griffin Bowie, Morgan Macko and Eric Rubak.

The Hoyas got hat tricks from Jake Carraway and Graham Bundy while Georgetown's Robert Clark was the game's leader in points with a pair of goals and four assists.

Bellarmine, which falls to 2-5 on the season, returns to action next week in another road game, traveling to Cleveland State to take on the Vikings in a 6 p.m contest on Friday, March 6.
