KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Another late triple doomed the Bellarmine Knights.
Rockhurst's Chris Hamil rimmed in a deep 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds remaining to give Rockhurst the lead and a pair of late free throws made the final margin four as the Hawks knocked off No. 12 Bellarmine 76-72 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Mason-Halpin Field House on Saturday afternoon.
Bellarmine (16-5, 9-5 GLVC) led for most of the game, but Hamil and the Hawks (14-8, 10-4 GLVC) heated up from the 3-point line in the second half and erased a 12-point second half deficit. Rockhurst took its first lead since early in the game at the 8:54 mark of the second half, and from there, the game featured nine lead changes and six ties.
The Knights got a go-ahead layup from
Dylan Penn with 17 seconds remaining to give BU a 72-71 lead. However, for the third time this season, a 3-pointer in the final seconds sent the Knights to defeat. Just as in Thursday's game, the Knights had a few seconds to set up a last-second shot, but, again, Bellarmine committed a turnover to dash any hope of pulling out a victory.
Hamil, who came into the game averaging 13 points a game and shooting 38 percent from 3-point range, was a one-man wrecking crew, finishing with 37 points (half of Rockhurst's team total) and dishing out five assists. He made 13 of 23 shots including eight of 15 from beyond the arc, doing most of his damage in the second half when he poured in 26 points. His hot hand led the Hawks to 59.3 percent shooting after halftime.
The game got off to a shaky start for Bellarmine as the Hawks took an early 6-0 lead on a pair of three-pointers, but the Knights responded with a 10-0 run. Bellarmine held the lead for the remainder of the half and went into intermission with a 38-30 cushion.
The Knights' final offensive numbers were good. As a team, Bellarmine shot 52.7 percent from the field and made nine of 11 free throws while committing just seven turnovers. The problem is that Rockhurst outshot the Knights by making 54.9 percent for the game, made all 10 of its free throws and outrebounded the Knights 30-20. Bellarmine made one more field goal than the Hawks, but Rockhurst doubled Bellarmine's 3-point production making 10 to just five for the Knights.
Bellarmine, which played without
Ben Weyer due to an injury in Thursday's game, placed four players in double figures, led by
Alex Cook's 21 points. Penn added 16 while
CJ Fleming and
Pedro Bradshaw tossed in 10 each.
While Hamil was Rockhurst's main force outside, center Quinton Curry was solid on the inside, just missing a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Bellarmine, which has played its last four games on the road, returns to Knights Hall on Thursday when they host Truman State at 8 p.m. The Bulldogs defeated Missouri-St. Louis today and will enter the game owning the best league record at 12-2.
