LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine University junior outfielder Matt Higgins received acknowledgement recently in D1Baseball's analysis of Major League Baseball draft prospects who are competing this summer for the Rockford Rivets of the Northwoods League.

Higgins was among 10 Rivets featured prominently in the publication's "Summer Scouting Trail" series that touched on Rockford.

"During my five-game look, Higgins was the most impressive hitter in a lineup full of draft prospects," D1Baseball's David Seifert wrote. "He showed plus raw power to his pull side and also during the game with a deep, foul fly ball to right field. His bat-to-ball skills set him apart with consistent, hard contact."

Seifert believes Higgins has the potential to have his name called in an early round on draft day.

"As a high-level college performer with a bat-first hit tool, expect Higgins to receive top-10 round consideration in 2021," Seifert wrote.

Higgins delivered one of the top individual seasons in Bellarmine program history in 2019. In a breakout sophomore campaign, the Louisville native was named a consensus All-American after garnering third-team honors from the Division II Conference Commissioners Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association, and honorable-mention notice from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The Trinity (Ky.) High School product was a consensus first-team All-Midwest Region selection and earned first-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference laurels.

Higgins led the GLVC in 2019 in batting average (.419) and hits (a program-record 90) while amassing 13 homers, 18 doubles and 63 RBIs. Before the remainder of the 2020 season was canceled due to the coronavirus, Higgins batted .378 with four doubles and 10 RBIs over 13 games.

Higgins is tied for the Rivets' team lead in homers with three and ranks third in RBIs with 15.
