LOUISVILLE, Ky. — At the midway point in its first season in Division I, the Bellarmine University wrestling team notched its first win in its new NCAA level.
Now Bellarmine (1-5, 1-3 Southern Conference) will be looking for more.
On Sunday, the Knights will face Virginia Military Institute (2-3, 1-2) and tri-meet host Gardner-Webb (0-7, 0-4) in Southern Conference duals. The Knights will square off with the Keydets at noon (ET) and the Runnin' Bulldogs at 2 p.m.
Bellarmine hosted its first-ever D1 event Sunday after welcoming The Citadel and Presbyterian. The former dual wasn't decided until the final bout, as The Citadel prevailed 27-18 over the Knights. Bellarmine regrouped to post a historic 32-18 victory over Presbyterian.
"The guys were excited about winning their first dual in D1," Knights Coach
Spencer Adams said. "I think it takes some pressure off of them and, hopefully, now they will wrestle a little more freely and up their offense even more. We've been improving as a team each week — so I'm happy with that — but there are still four more duals left to wrestle, and the last thing we need is to be content. Sometimes winning can be a curse; we just can't let that be the case."
Against The Citadel and Presbyterian, freshman
Chase Yost (141) prevailed in a pair of tightly contested matches. Senior
Alex Rhine (157) registered a fall and tech fall, and sophomore
Devan Hendricks (174) claimed an overtime win and followed with a fall. Senior
Eric Beck (165) notched a fall before gaining a forfeit win. In the extra matches, freshman
Logan Hoskins went 2-0. Freshmen
Easton Tobia (184) and
Adonis Boyd (125) were victorious in extra matches as well.
"The Citadel dual was an exciting match, the type of dual that makes wrestling exciting to watch," Adams said. "The matches were hard fought and it came right down to the end. I think both duals this weekend will be very much like that. We just have to keep our foot down on the pedal and make them wrestle our match. If we do that then we have a shot at winning both duals. If we don't then we could just as easily lose both duals — that's how close I think these duals will be. It should be a lot of fun."
