LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A hefty reward for simply tying Jacksonville was on the table for the Bellarmine University men's soccer team Saturday night at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
And the Knights collected.
Needing a tie or win to secure a berth in the ASUN Tournament, Bellarmine came up with the former, battling the Dolphins to a scoreless stalemate in their regular-season finale.
Bellarmine (6-7-2, 2-4-1 ASUN) is the six-seed and will meet three-seed FGCU in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. (ET) Friday at host Central Arkansas.
A berth in the conference tournament was also on the line for Jacksonville (3-10-1, 2-4-1 ASUN) on Saturday evening, but entrance required a victory over Bellarmine. The Dolphins were the defending champion but will not have the opportunity to defend their crown.
Jacksonville came close. In the final seconds of the first overtime, Bellarmine senior goalkeeper
Connor Range had to backpedal to make a leaping save on a deep shot from Cao Chaves. It was a heart-stopping moment for the Knights that seemed to come out of nowhere, as it initially seemed like the last few seconds would harmlessly tick off the clock.
In the preceding minute, Jacksonville had a sequence where it forced a save from Range, forced a block on a follow-up shot and then saw the would-be golden goal waved off due to offsides.
The second overtime was far less dramatic. The Dolphins had a single shot, and it was significantly off target.
Range collected five saves for Bellarmine, which posted its fourth shutout. The teams finished with 12 shots apiece, and five shots on goal each.
Bellarmine honored seniors Range,
Greg Fischer,
Nate Girao,
Micah Linscott and
Zabdiel Justiniano prior to the game.
