LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine field hockey wrapped up its season in overwhelming fashion at Frazier Stadium, beating Saint Francis 6-2 on Senior Day.
The Knights scored their most goals in one game in the Division I era and produced their largest margin of victory since transitioning to DI. With the win, BU ended its season 4-12 (2-5 MAC) including three wins in the team's final four games.
After honoring
Breanna McWhorter and
Cassidy Sweeney pre-game, that positive emotion spilled into the start of the season finale. Bellarmine got the offense chugging immediately with a
Marit van der Bend goal just 39 seconds into the game.
Anna Crump found van der Bend just left of the cage and she popped the ball into the upper right corner. Crump was credited with her third assist of the season.
Later in the first quarter,
Amber Hofenk Jerembo scored off a rebound, tallying her team-high seventh goal of the season. That gave Bellarmine a 2-0 lead moving into the second period.
The Knights would not score again until there was 58 seconds left in the first half.
Teresa Schmidt collected a rebound and scored her second goal of the season pushing Bellarmine to a 3-0 halftime advantage.
BU picked up right where it left off in the first half with a goal 51 seconds into the third quarter.
Marit van der Bend struck again for her second goal of the day and fourth of the season. Julia Doorenbos centered a pass in front of the cage, and van der Bend did not miss on the shot, pushing Bellarmine's lead to 4-0.
After picking up her fourth assist of the year, Doornebos tallied a goal herself five minutes into quarter number three. Right of goal and just inside the circle, she fired the ball into the upper left corner of the cage. Despite the very challenging shot, Doornebos cashed in her third goal of the year and Bellarmine led 5-0.
Saint Francis got one back a couple of minutes later as Eva Valentini snuck a ball through traffic to make it 5-1. But in the 38
th minute, the Knights scored their third goal of the third period as
Peyton Hobson spun in front of cage and slung the ball in for a 6-1 Knights lead.
The Red Flash got a late goal from Julia Breneman, but it was too late for the visitors. Bellarmine locked up a 6-2 win on Senior Day.
McWhorter was fabulous in goal in her final game, making 13 saves – her second most this season. The two-time MAC Defensive Player of the Week ended her season with a career-high 138 saves. During her four years at Bellarmine, McWhorter racked up 308 saves, ranking second in Knights history.
With her goal against Saint Francis, Hofenk Jerembo ended her season with a goal in four of her last five games.
Hofenk Jerembo led the Knights in goals this season (seven), Schmidt produced the most assists (five), while
Anna Crump took the most shots (30).
Along with a spectacular 6-2 Senior Day victory, the Knights defeated Ball State twice and Central Michigan in its final game at Trager Stadium this year.
Overall, BU ends its season 4-12 (2-5 MAC) including three wins in the team's final four games.
