ATHENS, Ohio — Despite a record four goals in the Division I era, Bellarmine field hockey suffered a heart-breaking loss at Ohio on Friday, falling 5-4 to the Bobcats in overtime.
The Knights trailed 1-0 just over a minute into the match, as Ohio's Katelyn Whittle tallied an early goal. Then Bellarmine found a furious offensive rhythm.
Anna Crump quickly tied the match in the fifth minute, scoring her second goal of the season straight in front of the cage.
Crump was not done as she started a flurry of Bellarmine offense in the second quarter.
Amber Hofenk Jerembo found Crump straight-on once again, and she gave the Knights a 2-1 lead, posting her third goal of the season.
Forty seconds later,
Julia Doornebos corralled a rebound just inside the circle and blasted it into the cage for a 3-1 lead. It was Doornebos' first goal as a Bellarmine Knight. The scoring for Doorneobs and the Knights did not stop there, as she rocketed the ball home off a penalty corner with 27 seconds to play in the half.
Isabel Gladys earned the assist, picking up her first career point.
The Knights entered the second half with a three-goal lead, but Ohio started its rally early in the third quarter. Noa Desmaretz scored within the first three minutes of the third frame to make it 4-2. The Bobcats scored another early in the fourth, thanks to a Katelyn Whittle goal. Bellarmine held on until Jillian Shive tied the game 4-4 with 3:10 remaining. Ohio had a penalty corner with under a minute remaining, but the Knights forced overtime.
Ohio continued its offensive pressure and scored just over a minute into the extra period to end the match. It was Katelyn Whittle again as she earned a hat trick.
