COLUMBUS, Ohio — After junior guard
Jaela Johnson led a courageous comeback bridging the first and second quarters, No. 21 Ohio State countered with a devastating haymaker in the form of a 29-0 run leading into halftime en route to a 110-58 win over the Bellarmine University women's basketball team Tuesday night in the Schottenstein Center.
For the second straight game, Johnson set a new career high in scoring for Bellarmine (0-4). The Knights' transfer tied her previous career best of 12 points in the first quarter alone and finished with 24 against the undefeated Buckeyes (4-0). She drained 9-of-19 shots, including 6-for-12 from 3-point range.
Bailee Harney also racked up a career high with 15 points for Bellarmine. The senior guard buried a trio of 3-pointers.
Ohio State jumped out to a 12-2 lead and pushed the advantage to 16 with 3:18 left in the first quarter, but Johnson scored the last six points in an 11-3 run that cut the deficit to single digits. The Buckeyes led 31-21 after the first period, but Johnson canned 5-of-6 shots, including a pair from deep, in keeping the Knights within striking distance.
Bellarmine further carved into its deficit in the second quarter when baskets by freshman forward
Haley Stoklosa and Harney got the Knights within five at 33-28. Bellarmine was still within eight with 6:19 left in the period after Stoklosa spotted sophomore forward
Lucy Robertson for a bucket.
That's when Ohio State unleashed the game-changing run. In the final 6:08 before the intermission, the Buckeyes scored 29 consecutive points to carry a 70-33 lead into the break. Jacy Sheldon was particularly impressive in the first half, pouring in 25 points on 10-for-12 shooting. She finished with 31 points after sinking 12 of her 15 field-goal attempts.
Bellarmine shot a strong 48.3 percent in the first half, but Ohio State turned 18 Knights turnovers into 34 points.
"I think we were moving the ball and had a lot of confidence in what we were doing," Knights Coach
Chancellor Dugan said. "They stayed in that press and really bumped up their pressure. We just couldn't recover from it."
Bellarmine will make its home debut when the Knights welcome Morehead State at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday to Freedom Hall.
"We've played tough teams with different styles," Dugan said. "I think we've gotten better every game."
