LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Loyola Marymount's Joe Quintana was red hot in the second half while the Bellarmine University men's basketball team went cold as the Lions captured a 71-57 win Tuesday night in Freedom Hall.
Quintana scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the second half for Loyola Marymount (7-5), which outscored Bellarmine 40-28 after the intermission. He sank five of his seven attempts from 3-point land in the second stanza and finished 7-of-11 overall from downtown.
"Quintana was the difference," Knights Coach
Scott Davenport said. "He was incredible."
Bellarmine (6-8) wasn't left wanting for quality looks, but the Knights struggled to knock down shots from the perimeter. Bellarmine shot 36.9 percent overall and just 21.4 percent (6 for 28) from beyond the arc.
The Knights didn't have a single turnover after halftime and had just four overall. Bellarmine also attempted 14 more shots than Loyola Marymount, but the shorthanded Knights — other than opening minutes — couldn't sustain a shooting rhythm.
"That game was perplexing," Davenport said. "We didn't have a turnover in the second half. We missed a lot of great opportunities. The numbers don't lie."
Davenport also praised Loyola Marymount. The Lions were strong inside with 32 points in the paint, and led by Quintana, they were a laudable 8-for-16 from 3-point range while shooting 52.9 percent overall.
"I'll tell you: They're a really good team," Davenport said. "They were scoring at a high clip."

Dylan Penn made a jumper and freshman forward
Curt Hopf converted a layup off a feed from senior guard
Juston Betz as the Knights hit their first five shots and raced out to an 11-2 lead.
Loyola Marymount responded with a 10-0 run and led by as many as six in the first half, but it was back and forth before the Lions took a 31-29 advantage into halftime. The game was knotted at 42 with 14 minutes left in the second half, but Loyola Marymount seized control with a 9-0 run triggered by a Quintana 3-pointer.
A little later, Quintana nailed consecutive 3-pointers during an 8-0 spurt that pushed Loyola Marymount's lead into double digits, where it stayed for the remainder of the contest.
Penn led Bellarmine with 18 points, Hopf added 13 and junior forward
Sam DeVault chipped in 12. Betz hauled in a career-high 11 rebounds.
