LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The holiday festivities got started a little early for the Bellarmine University women's basketball team.
The celebration began Wednesday night in Freedom Hall, as the Knights concluded the 2021 portion of their schedule with an 82-63 victory over Campbellsville-Harrodsburg behind a dominant fourth quarter.
Four players scored in double figures for Bellarmine (3-8), which now heads into ASUN action after capping its nonconference slate by rallying to defeat the upset-minded Pioneers. CU-Harrodsburg actually led by five early in the final period, but the Knights ended up winning comfortably after outscoring the Pioneers 28-7 in the last stanza.
"I really liked how we played in the fourth quarter," Bellarmine Coach
Chancellor Dugan said. "Obviously the first three weren't spectacular, but we did have moments. …This team has been through so much. They played their tails off Monday at Ball State, and we had one day of preparation."
Junior guard
Jaela Johnson drained four 3-pointers in matching a career high with 24 points and added six rebounds and four assists for Bellarmine. Senior guard
Presley Brown registered 16 points, six rebounds and four steals, while sophomore forward
Lucy Robertson collected 11 points. Sophomore guard
Mackenzie Keelin rounded out the Knights' double-figure scorers with 10 points.
Jaiden Douthit poured in a game-high 26 points and Oriona Woods tallied 20 for CU-Harrodsburg. Douthit canned a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter that provided the Pioneers a 59-54 advantage.
Bellarmine buckled down and grabbed the lead for good behind an 8-0 run. The Knights were clinging to a one-point edge with about six minutes left, but they turned back CU-Harrodsburg for good with a game-clinching 15-0 run.
Regaining its stroke from deep was critical for Bellarmine. The Knights went a combined 2-for-16 from 3-point land in the second and third quarters, but they buried four of their five attempts from beyond the arc in the fourth.
Johnson, sophomore guard
Hannah Farrell and senior guard
Kathleen Scott each nailed a shot from downtown inside the first five minutes to help Bellarmine pull away. Johnson knocked down another late as the Knights went 9-for-18 from the field overall in the fourth quarter.
Bellarmine also stepped up its game on the defensive end in the fourth. The Knights held CU-Harrodsburg to just seven points on 3-for-17 shooting in the frame.
Bellarmine opens ASUN play at 7 p.m. (ET) Jan. 5 at Jacksonville State.
"It's going to be a bear just like it was last year," Dugan said of conference play. "We've got the pieces; we've just got to step up every day. The practice court is where you get that. I think we'll keep building on what we're doing."
