Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | by Adam Pruiett, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

Men's basketball closes 1st half, opens 2nd with big runs in defeating Asbury

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The home venue changed. The result was much the same.

Playing Thursday night in the KFC Yum! Center instead of on their typical home court in Freedom Hall, the Bellarmine University men's basketball team got acclimated to the unfamiliar surroundings quickly, as four players scored in double figures en route to an 87-55 win over Asbury.

"It's incredible," Knights Coach Scott Davenport said of competing in the downtown arena. "They just won the first game in the history of Bellarmine University in the Yum! Center, and they can never take that away from them."

Senior guard Dylan Penn recorded the first double-double of his career for Bellarmine (4-6) after registering game highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds while also notching game bests in blocks (three) and steals (three) and tying for top honors in assists (six). Penn's amount of boards and swats were both career highs.

Senior forward Ethan Claycomb posted a season-high 15 points, and senior guard CJ Fleming matched him with 15. Junior guard Garrett Tipton chipped in 10 points and collected a career-high four assists, and senior guard Juston Betz tied a career high with six assists while pulling down seven rebounds. Junior forward Sam DeVault replicated a career best with seven rebounds.

Bellarmine patiently attacked Asbury's zone defense in piling up a 50-14 advantage in points in the paint. The Knights assisted on 23 of their 34 made baskets and shot 50.7 percent for the contest. Led by Penn, Bellarmine carried a 51-30 superiority on the glass.

Asbury — and more specifically John Shoulders — hung with Bellarmine for much of the first half. Shoulders buried four 3-pointers in the first nine minutes, and the Eagles trailed just 30-26 with 7:18 remaining before the intermission.

Claycomb took over at that juncture, scoring 10 points during a 13-0 run that he bookended with 3-pointers to push Bellarmine to a comfortable 43-28 lead at halftime. The Knights then opened the second half with an 11-0 run punctuated by a thunderous dunk from freshman forward Curt Hopf off a Betz feed in cruising to their fourth win in five games.

Twelve Knights saw action, with nine logging 12 or more minutes.

Bellarmine returns to Freedom Hall on Friday night by hosting Midway at 7.

"Now the challenge is back-to-back games," Davenport said, "and we will treat it just like you would a postseason tournament, a conference tournament in terms of preparation, hydration and taking care of our bodies."
