FLORENCE, Ala. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team's offense continued humming Tuesday in Flowers Hall.
Four players registered at least 13 points as the Knights earned a split with North Alabama following an 80-70 victory in ASUN action.
"I'm just so proud of this team," Knights Coach
Chancellor Dugan said. "It was definitely a team win."
Bellarmine (5-14, 5-9 ASUN) posted its highest point total of the season while snapping a four-game losing streak. Even though there were some setbacks, the Knights' offense has been splendid over its last three outings, with its latest performance against North Alabama (7-16, 6-8) including 48.3 percent shooting. Bellarmine sank half of its dozen 3-point attempts and, as is customary, was excellent at the free-throw line (18-for-22).
"We're getting good looks, and we've been crisper and sharper," Dugan said. "We're setting solid screens and cutting harder."
Defensively, Bellarmine limited North Alabama to 5-for-15 shooting from the 3-point line after the Lions hit 13-of-31 the previous game in an 89-76 win.
"We stayed home on everybody and didn't let them have 3s," Dugan said. "That was the key to the game."
Bellarmine displayed ideal scoring balance in the win. Senior guard
Tasia Jeffries paced the Knights with 20 points and five steals, senior guard
Breia Torrens buried 5-of-7 3-point shots in scoring 15 points, junior guard
Presley Brown matched her career high of 14 set the previous game and senior forward
Lauren Deel added 13 points. Junior forward
Sheniqua Coatney barely missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
The score was knotted at 14 after one quarter, but Bellarmine started creating some distance from UNA in the second period behind a 15-2 run that built its lead to 29-18. Torrens drained a 3-pointer to cap the first half as the Knights took a 36-28 advantage into the break.
Bellarmine maintained control in the third, particularly in the last two minutes as Torrens canned another 3-pointer and Coatney, Jeffries and Deel all converted layups for a 59-45 lead heading into the final quarter.
North Alabama got within eight with approximately six minutes left, but Torrens responded by drilling yet another trifecta and Brown had a steal and layup. Bellarmine capitalized on 21 UNA turnovers with 27 points, and the Lions never got closer than nine after Brown's theft and bucket.
Bellarmine concludes the regular season by hosting North Florida on March 5 and 6 in Freedom Hall.
