Coatney hot but Knights cold overall as Dolphins snap their win streak

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a back-and-forth affair Sunday in Swisher Gymnasium, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team couldn't quite tip the scales in its favor at the end.

Bellarmine saw its four-game winning streak snapped as Jacksonville controlled the fourth quarter in pulling out a 71-65 victory over the Knights in ASUN play.

"Obviously it's disappointing to lose, but when you're on the road and you get a split, that's a great thing," Knights Coach Chancellor Dugan said. "We can learn from this game and get better from it."

Bellarmine (4-11, 4-6 ASUN) had its winning streak halted by Jacksonville (3-10, 1-7) despite a colossal game from junior forward Sheniqua Coatney, who poured in a career-high 27 points on 11-for-14 shooting and had eight rebounds. Erin Wilson was impressive for the Dolphins, registering 25 points and 11 rebounds.

"Shaq had a great day," Dugan said. "The coaches have really talked to her about being an anchor in the middle, and she really responded today."

Senior guard Breia Torrens notched 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals for Bellarmine, senior forward Lauren Deel grabbed eight boards and junior guard Kathleen Scott dished out five assists. While the Knights were an exceptional 15-for-17 from the free-throw line, they struggled mightily from the 3-point line, hitting only two of their 24 attempts from deep.

"I just think we didn't make shots, pretty much the whole game," Dugan said. "We didn't start the game out executing our offense, and I think that got us out of rhythm. We were taking shots we don't normally take. I think that also affected us on the defensive end. They got too many transition baskets, especially in the fourth quarter."

Bellarmine led by seven on multiple occasions in the third quarter and carried a 49-44 advantage into the fourth. Jacksonville evened things up at 53 midway through the final period, and it was knotted up at 58 with 3:40 left.

Jacksonville followed with a 7-0 run that the Knights could not recover from as the Dolphins earned their first ASUN win.

Bellarmine is back in Freedom Hall next Saturday and Sunday, hosting North Florida at 2 p.m. (ET) both days.
