Field hockey falls to Chippewas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Central Michigan scored two goals apiece in the first and third quarters en route to a 5-2 win over the Bellarmine University field hockey team Saturday at Trager Stadium.

Sophomore forwards Lindsay Sturgeon and Amber Hofenk Jerembo scored a goal each for Bellarmine (0-4), while freshman midfielder Anna Crump and freshman forward Peyton Hobson added an assist apiece against Central Michigan (2-0).

Both teams scored in the fifth minute. The Chippewas struck first but Crump quickly found Sturgeon for the equalizer.

Central Michigan would regain the lead for good in the seventh minute on Lauren Buffington's goal. The Chippewas scored early in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead at halftime and pushed the advantage to 4-1 in the 39th minute when Rachel Ruttenberg rebounded her own shot and found the net.

Hofenk Jerembo made a spectacular shot while diving off a pass from Hobson to cut the deficit in half in the 40th minute, but CMU pushed its advantage back to three goals in the 45th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Breanna McWhorter collected five saves for Bellarmine, which hosts Kent State on Friday and Saturday at Trager Stadium. Kara Guess was honored on Senior Day for the Knights.
