Barringer tosses gem in baseball's 5-1 win over North Alabama

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Senior left-hander Shane Barringer fired 8.0 shutout innings in leading the Bellarmine University baseball team to a series-clinching 5-1 win over North Alabama in ASUN action Saturday afternoon at Knights Field.

Barringer (1-3) racked up eight strikeouts and allowed only two hits in his 8.0 scoreless innings for Bellarmine (6-10, 2-3 ASUN), which notched victories in the first two of the three-game series with North Alabama (1-15, 0-5) and has now won three straight.

Bellarmine scored three of its five runs in the third. Junior center fielder Jack Ockerman led off with his first homer at Bellarmine, a solo shot to right center.

Junior shortstop Clayton Mehlbauer smacked a double to center and scored on senior left fielder Chris Gambert's single. Bellarmine upped the lead to 3-0 when freshman designated hitter Drew Buhr followed junior right fielder Jacob Mulcahy's double with a sacrifice fly.

Mulcahy drove in Bellarmine's final two runs with an RBI single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. He had two hits, as did Finerty, Mehlbauer and Gambert.

Bellarmine and North Alabama will conclude the series at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Knights Field.
