Men's tennis engages in tight battle with UNA before falling

FLORENCE, Ala. — North Alabama edged the visiting Bellarmine University men's tennis team 4-3 in an ASUN match on Sunday.

Bellarmine (3-15, 0-2 ASUN) secured the doubles point against North Alabama (3-9, 1-1) after sophomores Cole Groetsch and Michael Staff defeated Guilherme Diniz and Tim Heslin 6-4 at No. 2, and freshmen Emil B. Berglund and Eli Franks bested Kyle Johnson and Jamie Bixby 7-6 (10-8) at No. 3.

Freshman Paul Reynolds topped Guilherme Diniz in straight sets at No. 3 singles, and Groetsch captured a marathon three-set victory over Carlos Matarredona at No. 1 where Groetsch triumphed in tiebreakers in the final two sets.

North Alabama won in straight sets at Nos. 2,4 and 5, but it took a hard-fought three-set win at No. 6 to squeak by the Knights.

Bellarmine hosts Liberty at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
