LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team will look to cool off one of the hottest teams in the country when it welcomes Liberty for a three-game ASUN series at Knights Field.
The squads will meet at 2 p.m. (ET) Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Flames (14-5, 3-0 ASUN) will have arrive in Louisville with a 12-game winning streak in tow. The streak includes a pair of wins over a ranked North Carolina squad and a conference sweep of North Alabama where they shut out the Lions all three games.
Liberty was idle in ASUN play last weekend but played VCU in a home-and-home series Saturday and Sunday, winning 3-2 and 6-1. The Flames then hosted Virginia on Wednesday and rolled to a 10-2 victory behind a five-run first.
Liberty doesn't allow many runs — or give many away. Only seven of the 71 runs the Flames have yielded have been unearned, as they average about one error every two games. During its 12-game winning streak, Liberty allowed more than four runs just once. The Flames' team ERA is 3.47 and opponents are hitting only .213 against their staff.
Liberty's expected rotation for the weekend consists of Trevor Delaite (2-1, 2.28 ERA, 29 strikeouts in 27.2 innings pitched), Mason Meyer (2-1, 2.31, 27 in 23.1) and Trey Gibson (3-2, 4.82, 26 in 18.2). David Erickson has made a team-high 10 relief appearances and is 5-0 with a 1.57 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 23.0 innings pitched.
Aaron Anderson leads Liberty with a .342 batting average and nine doubles. Will Wagner has a team-high 15 RBIs and Logan Mathieu has a team-best five home runs.
Bellarmine (7-11, 3-3) had won four straight games before suffering a 9-1 nonconference loss to visiting Austin Peay on Tuesday. Last weekend, the Knights swept their ASUN home series against North Alabama, posting victories of 9-4, 5-1 and 6-3.
Senior third baseman
Josh Finerty was named ASUN co-Player of the Week after batting .526 in that UNA series plus an additional win at Western Kentucky, collecting multiple hits in each contest. Senior left-hander
Shane Barringer fired 8.0 shutout innings in the Game 2 win over North Alabama, while senior right-hander
Jacob Nagel bookended the sweep with two relief outings of 3.0 scoreless innings each.
