Pitching, back-to-back HRs by Finerty, Mehlbauer highlight win in split with EMU

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday with Eastern Michigan, topping the Eagles 2-1 in the opener before falling 12-6 in the tail end at Knights Field.

Eastern Michigan (4-1) leads the four-game series 2-1 over Bellarmine (2-6).

Game 1: Bellarmine 2, EMU 1
Pitching and back-to-back home runs in the fourth lifted Bellarmine to the win in the opener.

Senior right-hander Deylen Miley (2-1) struck out nine while allowing one run on six hits in 5.2 innings. Senior right-hander Anthony Ethington retired all four batters he faced in collecting the save with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Bellarmine got all the offense it would require in the fourth when senior third baseman Josh Finerty cranked a solo homer to left center, and junior shortstop Clayton Mehlbauer followed with a smash to center. The pair's first respective home runs of the season provided the Knights a lead they would not relinquish.

Junior outfielder Matt Higgins notched two of Bellarmine's five hits.

Game 2: EMU 12, Bellarmine 6
Bellarmine was hurt by walks in falling in Friday's series opener, and errors hurt the Knights in the Game 3 loss. Most of their five came in the early going and contributed heavily to a 7-0 deficit after three innings.

The Knights got within 8-5 by the sixth after senior designated hitter/left fielder Chris Gambert roped a two-run homer, Higgins pounded a solo shot and junior utility Jacob Mulcahy hit a towering solo drive, but EMU scored four runs in the seventh, three of which occurred after another costly Knights error.

Finerty and Mulcahy had two hits apiece in the tail end. Higgins' homer was his third of the season, while Gambert and Mulcahy now have two each.

Bellarmine and EMU will conclude the series at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
