Mulcahy's 2-run walk-off homer lifts baseball in 11-10 thriller over EMU

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There was so much back and forth Sunday afternoon at Knights Field that anyone watching the contest between the Bellarmine University baseball team and Eastern Michigan might have experienced whiplash.

The wild affair ended with the Knights engaging in a raucous celebration after junior utility Jacob Mulcahy launched a walk-off two-run homer in the 10th inning that propelled Bellarmine to a pulse-pounding 11-10 victory and series split with the Eagles.

Bellarmine (3-6), which took Games 2 and 4, rallied from a 6-2 deficit to grab a 7-6 advantage after a five-run sixth. Eastern Michigan (4-2) countered with a pair of runs in the seventh to regain the lead, but the Knights sent the game to extra innings after tying it up at 8-8 with a run in the ninth after junior shortstop Clayton Mehlbauer led off with a double and scored on freshman second baseman Brett Pfaadt's sacrifice fly.

Eastern Michigan scored a pair of unearned runs in the 10th, and it appeared uncharacteristic defensive miscues that also plagued Bellarmine in its Game 3 loss might bite the Knights again.

However, opportunities given evened out a little bit in the bottom of the 10th as EMU committed an error on senior left fielder Chris Gambert's ground ball to start the frame. Junior outfielder Matt Higgins followed with his fourth hit — a single — and Gambert scored on a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Josh Finerty after previously advancing on a passed ball.

With Bellarmine trailing 10-9, Mulcahy faced a 1-2 count against Zach Fruit (0-1) before unloading on the next pitch and sending a soaring drive over the left-field fence to lift the Knights to victory in walk-off fashion. Mulcahy also hit a no-doubt homer Saturday and has three round-trippers on the season.

After earning a save in the second game of the series, reliever Anthony Ethington (1-0) notched the win in the finale. The senior right-hander tossed the final 4.0 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts.

Bellarmine amassed 13 hits. Higgins finished 4-for-6 with an RBI double. Finerty piled up four RBIs and he, Gambert, Mulcahy and sophomore designated hitter Dylan Byerly had two hits each.

Bellarmine will play Tuesday at Eastern Illinois.
