LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The history making didn't end with the magical 2019 campaign for the Bellarmine University men's soccer team.
On Saturday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Knights posted their first-ever Division I win over a nationally ranked squad as sophomore forward
Juan Ballas drove in a header off a corner kick for the golden goal late in the first overtime of a 2-1 triumph over 15th-ranked Liberty in ASUN play.
"I'm real proud of the guys," Knights Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "It was just a big win for the program all around."
Ballas netted both goals for Bellarmine (2-2, 2-0 ASUN), which has delivered two victories to start a conference slate that consists of only four league games. The Knights became the first team this season to score against previously unbeaten Liberty (5-1-1, 0-1), which had a goal advantage of 11-0 over its first six matches.
With less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime, sophomore midfielder
Andrew Minnis launched a corner kick toward the back post. Ballas rammed a header toward the corner of the far post that found the net and triggered a delirious celebration. It was Ballas who registered the game-winning goal on a header off a free kick in Bellarmine's 3-2 victory over McKendree in the 2019 GLVC Tournament finals.
"Andrew served a great ball, and it was a great header," Chastonay said. "We had to withstand Liberty's pressure, and we knew set pieces would be critical. Sure enough, we got two goals on set pieces."
Thwarting a set piece set the tone for Bellarmine. Five minutes into the contest, Liberty was awarded a penalty kick. Gabe Findley attempted to slot the ball inside the right post, but sophomore goalkeeper
Matthew Brozovich dived left and knocked the shot away. The reigning ASUN co-Defensive Player of the Week finished with four saves, none bigger than foiling the PK attempt.
"There were defining moments in the game, and that started with Matt's PK save," Chastonay said. "We weren't chasing the game. That was huge."
Less than five minutes later, Ballas was setting up for a penalty kick for Bellarmine after sophomore midfielder
Haziq Zed was fouled in the box. Ballas capitalized by sinking his opportunity.
"Juan just stepped up and smashed it," Chastonay said.
Early in the second half, Bellarmine had a near-miss to go up 2-0, and Liberty's Musa Morris knotted it at 1-all less than a minute later. It could have been a huge momentum shift.
"That changed the game," Chastonay said, "but the guys didn't let that affect them and battled back."
Bellarmine finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots, but they were even at five apiece on frame. Both teams attempted four corner kicks.
Bellarmine will play at 7 p.m. (ET) Wednesday at Dayton in a nonconference match.
