Goatley leads Knights with arm and bat as Bellarmine takes down Stetson

KENNESAW, Ga.-- The Bellarmine University softball team took a 7-1 victory over conference foe Stetson in the final game of  its ASUN crossover action at Bailey Park on host Kennesaw State University's campus.

A lengthy rain delay wasn't enough to cool off the Bellarmine offense that produced seven runs on seven hits. After leaving the bases loaded in the first, the Knights repeated the feat in the second after back-to-back base hits from Carley Ziegler and Olivia Bricker and Grace Werner was hit by a pitch. After working the count to 3-1, second baseman Anna Greenwell drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the game's first run. After a passed ball allowed another run to come across, Bellarmine pitcher Carson Goatley helped her own cause with a two-out single up the middle that plated two more runs.

The Knights added another run in the bottom of the third after third baseman Gwen Malecke led off the frame with her first home run of the season and the first of her collegiate career. Stetson starter Chloe Temples bounced back from the leadoff homer and struck out the next three Bellarmine hitters she saw in order. Temples ended up going three innings, giving up five runs on four hits and striking out five Knights.

Bellarmine extended its lead to seven in the bottom of the fourth.  A leadoff walk to Greenwell and a second base hit from Goatley set the stage for catcher Sydney Young to plate two more with an RBI single to right field.

The Hatters plated their only run of the game on the strength of four straight singles started by pinch hitter Alyssa Gilman and capped with an RBI single by center fielder Riley Russell.

In the circle, Goatley turned in her second complete game in as many days, giving up just one run on eight hits while striking out six.

The Knights (6-20) are back home Wednesday to host Lipscomb University for a midweek ASUN clash. First pitch is scheduled for 3 PM from Knights field.
