Men's soccer edged in ASUN semifinals after late goal by FGCU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast University scored inside the last six minutes to pull out a 2-1 win over the Bellarmine men's soccer team in the ASUN Championship semifinals Thursday at Southern Oak Stadium.

The loss ends a memorable first season in Division I and the ASUN for Bellarmine (4-4), which earned the North Division's one-seed in the conference tournament. Sophomore midfielder Haziq Zed scored less than 10 minutes into the match for the Knights, but South two-seed and ASUN preseason favorite FGCU (3-3-4) scored two unanswered goals to secure a berth in the finals.

The second goal for FGCU came in the 85th minute. The Eagles headed the ball twice off a corner kick, with Max Edwards driving the latter into the net for the eventual game-winner.

In fact, it took two impressive goals for FGCU to knock off Bellarmine. In the 16th minute, the Eagles knotted it at 1-all after O'Vonte Mullings found the net with a diving header off a low cross from Trevin Myers for his fifth goal of the season.

Bellarmine got on the board early on Zed's third goal of the season. In the eighth minute, the Knights quickly played a free kick from the left wing. Senior midfielder Greg Fischer delivered a cross inside the box to a charging Zed, who beat the goalkeeper with a shot inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.

The early exchange of goals by the teams wasn't a sign of things to come. They largely kept the dangerous chances to a minimum, with Bellarmine finishing with a 10-8 edge in shots, including 4-3 on frame.

The Knights outshot the Eagles 6-3 in the first half, while FGCU had a 5-4 edge in the second stanza. The Eagles had the upper hand in corner kicks, 5-3.
