Bisons blank Knights in final home doubleheader of the year

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine softball team played for the last time this season at Knights Field on Tuesday, dropping both games of a doubleheader to ASUN Conference foe Lipscomb.

The Knights' offense sputtered all day, producing just five hits in the two games as Lipscomb shut out Bellarmine in both contests, winning 8-0 in six innings in the opener and scoring four times in the last inning to turn back the Knights 4-0 in game two.

In the opener, the Bisons used timely hitting and capitalized on Bellarmine miscues to build their lead and closed out the Knights an inning early by scoring run number eight in the top of the sixth.

The Lipscomb offense produced only eight total hits, but Bellarmine pitching issued nine free passes to Bisons batters (seven walks and two hit batters). A pair of errors proved costly to the Knights as only three of the eight Lipscomb runs were earned.

Bisons hurler Maddie Siemer turned in a solid effort in tossing a six-inning complete game, surrendering just two hits and two walks.

Game two was quite the pitchers duel through the first six innings as Bellarmine's Carson Goatley and Lipscomb's Breanna Burke were in control, giving up a combined seven hits and issuing just one walk between them.

The Bisons finally broke through in the seventh inning. After the leadoff batter reached on an error, Lipscomb played "small ball" to get its offense rolling. A sacrifice bunt and four singles led to a 4-run seventh.

Burke took it from there, retiring the Knights in order in the home half of the frame to close out the shutout and pick up the pitching victory.  Burke allowed just three Bellarmine baserunners all day on three singles.

Of Bellarmine's five hits on the day, Hannah Webb recorded two of them, singling in both games.

Bellarmine will now close its 2021 campaign on the road.  The Knights travel to Lynchburg, Virginia this weekend to meet the Liberty Flames in a three-game set, and they will finish the regular season at Lipscomb on May 1 and 2.
