JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The host Jacksonville Dolphins scored with just over a minute and half remaining in the game to edge the Bellarmine Knights 8-7 in a Southern Conference game at D.B. Milne Field.
This final margin of 8-7 represented the only lead Jacksonville held as Bellarmine came out of the gates strong. Goals by Denton Macdonald and Landon Trout put the Knights up 2-0 early in the contest, and Bellarmine was able to push the lead to 4-1 at the end of the quarter with Christian Della Rocco scoring late in the quarter before an own goal gave Bellarmine another one in the dying seconds of the first.
The Knights offense was blanked in the second quarter as Jacksonville was able to make it a 4-3 game at the half with Jeremy Winston and Ibrahim Pio having the only two goals of the quarter. An early third quarter goal from Kyle Playsted to end the Knights' scoring drought and Trout and Eric Rubak each found the back of the net in the fourth to keep the Knights ahead 7-6.
However, Rubak's transition goal at the 8:23 mark of the fourth would be the last bit of offense the Knights would taste. Jack Dolan followed just minutes later with one to tie things up at 7-7 for Jacksonville and Matt Stagnitta had the game-winner for the Dolphins with 1:39 showing on the clock.
Bellarmine had two opportunities late to force overtime but a turnover and a stopped Trout shot would be the results of those back-to-back possessions.
"We gave a good team too many opportunities we could have avoided and to Jacksonville's credit they took advantage of it," Bellarmine coach Andy Whitley said.
The Knights had five different goal scorers in the contest with Landon Trout leading the way with two goals. Della Rocco had a goal and an assist.
"Our young offensive players have gotten a lot more minutes than I expected," Whitley said. "They are earning their stripes in some meaningful moments." r
Rubak scooped up seven ground balls and caused one turnover in addition to his one goal. JC Higginbotham made 16 saves in cage.
Jack Dolan led Jacksonville with three goals and an assist for four points while Matt Stagnitta had two goals. Defensively, Jason Yoquinto made eight saves in cage and Colin Hinton had three caused turnovers with two ground balls for the Dolphins while Nathan Kapp went 16-for-19 at the faceoff dot.
Bellarmine (4-10, 1-4 SoCon) closes out its regular season next Saturday at home against Mercer.
