Bellarmine concludes first D-I season with 5-1 loss to Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio--The Bellarmine Knights field hockey team's first season in NCAA Division I came to an end early Sunday afternoon in Athens, Ohio as the host Ohio Bobcats took a 5-1 decision.

"Our historic season at the Division I level has concluded, and I could not be more proud of each one of them," said Bellarmine head coach Devanny Boisvert. "They embody what it means to be a Bellarmine field hockey player and had great attitudes all season long."

The Bobcats opened the scoring early when senior midfielder Jillian Shive logged her eighth goal of the season with 3:14 remaining in the first quarter. Shive then assisted on the game's second goal, which came off the stick of Katelyn Whittle just 1:23 into the second period. Freshman Tasmin Williams then pushed the lead to 3-0 on the first of her two goals in the game. Shive struck again with about nine and a half minutes remaining in the half to extend the Bobcats' lead to four.

Bellarmine got its lone goal when Amber Hofenk Jerembo registered her sixth score of the season with less than five minutes to go in the half.

The only tally of the second half came in the third quarter when Williams recorded her second goal of the game for Ohio.

Bellarmine goalie Breanna McWhorter made 10 saves on 15 shots faced, allowing five goals through 45 minutes of playing time before being replaced by backup Danni Swallow, who started the fourth and made three saves. Also of note defensively, was a defensive save in the fourth quarter by senior Kara Guess, who—as the team's lone senior--was playing in her final game as a Knight.

Offensively, Hofenk Jerembo led the Knights in shots on goal with a pair, while Hannah Brown added another shot toward the Ohio net. Three Knights starters played the full 60 minutes, them being Brown, Anna Crump, and Peyton Hobson.

Bellarmine concludes its first D-I season with an 0-13 overall record, going 0-4 at home and 0-8 on the road.

"We learned so much this season, gained a lot of valuable experience, and realized we can be competitive at this level," said Coach Boisvert. "The future is bright for Bellarmine field hockey."
