MUNCIE, Ind.--The Ball State Cardinals swept the Easter weekend doubleheader with the Bellarmine Knights with a 3-1 defensive victory on a chilly Saturday afternoon in Briner Stadium.
Sophomore forward
Amber Hofenk Jerembo scored the lone goal for the Knights about three minutes into the first quarter, after which the Cardinals scored three unanswered to secure the victory.
"Playing two games back-to-back against the same opponent can be physically and mentally tough," said Bellarmine Coach
Devanny Boisvert, "We came out strong in the first quarter with scoring in the first five minutes. Kudos to
Amber Hofenk Jerembo for continuing to find the back of the cage and scoring two goals this weekend."
Ball State outshot Bellarmine in total shots and shots on goal with 34-5 and 19-5 advantages, respectively. The Cardinals also enjoyed a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners. Bellarmine junior goalie
Breanna McWhorter did make an impressive 14 saves for the Knights, half of which came in the third quarter of play.
"Defensively, Bre McWhorter continues to have an impressive season, with 14 saves today," said Boisvert, who also singled out
Grace Dukes and
Abby Hodges for recording defensive saves.
After Hofenk Jerembo's fourth goal of the 2021 season, Ball State responded four minutes later when Kerrianne McClay tipped a shot past McWhorter to tie the game at one apiece. The Cardinals took the lead for good when Michaela Greeney found the back of the cage with 3:09 remaining in the first quarter. The final goal of the game came by way of a penalty stroke that Rachel Pereira converted for her fourth goal of the season.
With the loss to Ball State, the Knights drop to 0-8 on the season and 0-4 on the road. "Although we did not come out with a win this weekend, there has been a lot of success with this young team," said Boisvert.
Bellarmine's next outing sees them travel to Boone, North Carolina to play Appalachian State on April 10 and 11 for the first of two games in a six-game road trip to finish off the regular season. Both Appalachian State games have a noon start. "We know we can be competitive at the Division I level and are looking forward to the improvement as we face App. State next weekend," said Boisvert.
