Baseball's Finerty recognized among ASUN's Spring Winners for Life

ATLANTA — The ASUN Conference recognized its 2020-21 Spring Winners for Life team Wednesday. The team is composed of one student-athlete from each of the nine institutions and honors those who display excellence on and off the playing surface.

Josh Finerty, a selection to both the 2021 ASUN Baseball All-Academic and All-Conference Teams, started in all 47 games that he appeared this season. The third baseman led the Knights in hits (58), runs scored (41), doubles (14), triples (2), total bases (94) and multi-hit games (16). The Biology major with a 3.91 GPA belonged to BU's orientation team for two years while also serving as the baseball team's SAAC representative. He volunteered with the Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk in downtown Louisville and has been accepted into medical school at the University of Kentucky.

Kayla Whetstone has over 80 hours of community service with organizations such as the Lee County Winter Games, Treeline Elementary, and the Miracle League. She has been an Eagles Council representative since 2019 and was the Social Media Chair during the 2020-21 academic year. She is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma and her academic accomplishments include making the President's List four times, Dean's List four times and AD Honor Roll eight times. She went 23-8 at the No. 2 pair this past season, winning 14 of her final 16 matches and defeated five ranked teams on the season. The junior holds FGCU's all-time wins record (67) and became just the third student-athlete in program history to be a two-time First Team All-ASUN selection.

The 2021 ASUN Women's Lacrosse Tournament MVP, Sarah Elms started in all 14 games for Jacksonville this season as she racked up 60 goals on a league-leading 137 shots. She became the fifth Dolphin in program history to be named the ASUN Player of the Year, securing the honor by unanimous vote. Off the field, she had a 3.41 GPA as a Kinesiology major and actively participated in all team-related community outreach initiatives. In the NCAA Tournament First Round matchup against Vanderbilt, she tallied season-highs in shots on goal (11), goals (7) and points (8). She was also named an Honorable Mention All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine and was placed on the Division I All-South Region Second Team.

Sarah Hendrick serves as Kennesaw State's Women's Cross Country SAAC representative and has a 3.95 GPA with a Nursing Interest major. She was a member of the ASUN All-Academic Team and was named to the KSU Dean's List. At the Crimson Tide Invite on April 10, the junior won the 800-Meter with a time of 2:01.47 to set a school record and qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials. She also won the 800m and 1,500m at the ASUN Outdoor Championship and was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer. At the NCAA Outdoor Championship, she earned NCAA and USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors.

A unanimous selection to the 2021 Men's Golf All-Conference Team, Kieran Vincent finished in the top-10 in six-of-seven Liberty events during the 2021 spring season. He played 15-of-21 rounds at par or better (71.4 percent) for the Flames while recording nine sub-70 rounds. The graduate student has a GPA of 3.12 in Exercise Science and Wellness. He was named to the All-Tournament Team after he finished tied for fourth place with a 4-under-par 209 (68-69-72) at the ASUN Men's Golf Championship. Off the course, his community service projects include Attitude of Gratitude and Dollar Makes a Difference. He finished the year No. 19 in the Golfstat rankings and was as high as No. 6 in the country this season, the highest individual ranking in school history.

Shane Streich, who holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in the MBA program at Lipscomb, was named the 2021 Men's Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and also was named to the ASUN All-Academic Team. He was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer at the ASUN Outdoor Championship after earning the gold medal in both the 800-Meter and 1,500-Meter. He made league history twice by becoming the conference's first student-athlete to place in the 800m at the NCAA Outdoor Championship and also the first to be tabbed a First Team All-American in the event. His finish time of 1:46.70 also set a new Lipscomb program record.

Reid Homan graduated Summa Cum Laude from North Alabama in May with a 4.0 GPA in Business Administration and plans to return to UNA in 2021-22 as a graduate student. He hit .258 this season and set UNA Division I records with a 13-game hitting streak, as well as a streak of reaching base safely in 19-straight games. He was named to the All-Academic Team and scored 14 runs during the season. Off the field, his civic engagements include the Red Cross Blood Drive, Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day, Baseball ROTC Run to Remember 9/11 Victims and the Billy Reid Shindig.

A member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Alex Kachler became the first-ever ASUN Baseball student-athlete to be named Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the same season. He has a 4.0 GPA in the MS program in Management. During the season, he hit .356 with 40 runs, 13 doubles, eight home runs, 38 RBI, 31 walks and a .569 slugging percentage. He set the UNF record for hits in consecutive at-bats with eight in a row while also tying a program single-game record hitting safely in five at-bats on April 25 against Jacksonville.

Kamryn Johnson had a 23-9 record this season at Pair 3 for the Hatters and went a perfect 3-0 at the ASUN Championship. The junior with a 3.35 overall GPA is majoring in Elementary Education at Stetson and was a member of both the ASUN All-Conference Second Team and All-Freshmen Team. She registered 10 wins over ranked opponents (#15 TCU, #12 FAU (four times]), #13 South Carolina (twice), #18 Georgia State, and #20 FGCU (twice). She also mentored young children during the summer and local camps to help develop life skills, personal growth and healthy relationships. Her civic engagements also included volunteering at a local elementary school to help educate students in physical education, mental awareness and personal self-esteem.

The Winners for Life team honors a campus citizen that is respected as one who shares and/or demonstrates the ASUN Core Values: Education, Honesty, Student-Athlete Experience, Fairness, Health, Ambition, Respect, Diversity, Inclusion, Leadership, Responsibility, and Sportsmanship. To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must have competed in the current academic year in an ASUN sponsored sport and be in good academic standing at his/her university.
