DAYTON, Ohio — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team is already racking up the minutes.
For the second straight game to open the season, Bellarmine played to a 1-1 draw, the most recent coming Thursday against Wright State at Alumni Field.
"That was a good performance from enough people tonight to get a result on the road against a team with some dangerous players," Knights Coach
Chris Tinius said. "There were definitely enough good moments to make you excited about what this team can be, but our commitment floats in and out and leaves you wanting for more."
The tie for Bellarmine (0-0-2) against Wright State (1-0-1) had many similarities to its 1-1 deadlock with Evansville in the season opener. In both games, the Knights found the net in the 54th minute to take a 1-0 lead after a scoreless first half. But in each match, Bellarmine's opponent responded with the tying goal before the contest ended in a stalemate.
Senior midfielder
Regan Kommor has been involved in both of Bellarmine's goals this season. After collecting an assist against Evansville, the UAB grad transfer put away her first goal for the Knights, locating the net early in the second half against Wright State off an assist from junior forward
Zenia Nava.
Bellarmine kept Wright State off the scoreboard until the 80th minute, when Michelle Rings scored off an assist from Mikaylee Zeurcher.
"We knew with the way Wright State could stretch us and create some overloads, we would have moments where we were holding on," Tinius said. "We also knew if we approached it correctly, we could create some good numbers for ourselves in certain pockets. I think both of things played out during the night. We did a great job reorganizing out of the half and finding a goal. Unfortunately, that's two games in a row where the goal has been more of a relief than a rallying cry."
Senior goalkeeper
Elyssa Francis notched four saves for Bellarmine. Wright State posted a 13-9 advantage in shots with a 5-4 edge in shots on frame.
Bellarmine hosts Purdue Fort Wayne at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
"The commitment we need right now is much more on the mental side, paying attention to details," Tinius said. "Part of that is being young. We'll keep at it as coaches to find different ways to get it across to them because we can be better in our role as well."
