LOUISVILLE, Ky. — No. 22 Lipscomb scored with 15 seconds left in the first overtime to defeat the Bellarmine University men's soccer team 2-1 in an ASUN Conference opener Saturday night at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The matchup between the unbeaten Bisons (5-0-2, 1-0 ASUN) and Knights (3-2-1, 0-1) didn't disappoint as a showdown between the Atlantic Region's No. 1-ranked team versus its No. 6-rated squad.
In the end, with time winding down in the first overtime and the match knotted at 1-all, Lipscomb's Killian Byrne served to Hayes Wood near the right corner of the goalie box, and Wood lofted a header above the defense and into the top left corner of the net for the golden goal.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, sophomore forward
Nolan McGrath delivered the equalizer in the 70th minute for Bellarmine. Streaking down the right side, he made a splendid cut back in the box to elude a defender and slotted the ball inside the far post for his first goal of the season.
Lipscomb took its 1-0 lead in the 29th minute as Bakary Bagayoko connected with Marlon Grossman to provide the Bisons the advantage.
Lipscomb finished with a 21-14 edge in shots, including 9-6 on frame. The Bisons tallied all three of the overtime's shots, making good on their final attempt.
Senior goalkeeper
Connor Range registered seven saves for Bellarmine, while Lipscomb's Michael Sibley had five.
Bellarmine shifts back to nonconference play with a 7 p.m. (ET) match Tuesday at IUPUI.
