Knights drop 6-2 decision to Lock Haven

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo.—The Bellarmine Knights field hockey team matched its season high with two goals, but it wasn't enough as Lock Haven totaled six in the neutral site game played at SportPort International on Saturday.

The Knights surrendered a pair of first quarter goals, but neither team found the back of the cage in the second period, so the score remained 2-0 in favor of Lock Haven at halftime.

The Eagles extended their lead to 4-0 in the third period, converting a penalty stroke and a fast-break opportunity before Avery Bryanton notched her first career goal to break the Bellarmine scoring drought with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter. Anna Crump assisted on the Bryanton score.

Lock Haven (3-4) struck first in the final period, but the Knights trimmed the lead to 5-2 as Amber Hofenk Jerembo scored off an assist from Marit van der Bend. The Eagles closed the scoring with a goal in the 58th minute to make the final margin four.

Lock Haven outshot the Knights 20-14, but Bellarmine had opportunities and held a 10-6 advantage in corners.

Bellarmine goalie Breanna McWhorter logged all 60 minutes in the cage and totaled eight saves.

The Knights fell to 1-7 on the season and will get a chance for their second victory on Sunday when they face the St. Louis Billikens at 4 p.m. (3 p.m. CT) at SportPort International.
