Knights fall 3-2 in tight game at Saint Louis

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo.—The Bellarmine field hockey team scored two goals for the second consecutive game, but the Knights came up short by a final score of 3-2 in a back and forth affair against Saint Louis on Sunday.

After a scoreless first quarter, Bellarmine fell behind 1-0 a few minutes into the second period.  The Knights responded less than five minutes later though to even the score the score at one.  Amber Hofenk Jerembo tipped a Knights shot into the cage, tallying her third goal of the season and second of the weekend.  Marit van der Bend was credited with the assist, giving the freshman a team-high three assists this fall.

Like Bellarmine, the Billikens showed resilience by scoring a goal just 16 seconds later to take a 2-1 advantage.  Saint Louis would take that lead into halftime.

The scoring resumed midway through the third period, when Anna Crump tipped the ball home for her first goal of the season, tying the game 2-2.  Julia Doornebos assisted on the score.  Crump finished the weekend with three points after an assist against Lock Haven on Saturday.

Saint Louis again answered, producing the deciding goal with 55 seconds left in the third quarter.  Lauren Pendergast scored off a rebound to give the Billikens a 3-2 lead.

The Knights had one final chance, earning a penalty corner with 22 seconds remaining, but Saint Louis held on for its first win of the season.

The Billikens outshot the Knights 18-10, while corners were even at four.

Bellarmine goalie Breanna McWhorter logged all 60 minutes in the cage and totaled eight saves.  With her fifth save in the fourth quarter, McWhorter passed Heather Gregory for the second most saves in Bellarmine history.

The Knights fall to 1-8 on the season and return home to face Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.  The game at Trager Stadium will broadcast on BU Knights Sports Network.
