Knights battle early but fall 5-0 to No. 24 Kent State

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine field hockey team hung tight with No. 24 Kent State early, but the Golden Flashes used four goals in the middle quarters to pull away for a 5-0 victory at Trager Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights came out aggressive and held possession for a strong portion of the first quarter.  After an evenly played 15 minutes, Kent State led 4-3 in shots with penalty corners even 2-2.  The nationally ranked Golden Flashes shifted momentum in the second quarter though, as Jersey Hasenbos scored with under eight minutes remaining in the half.

It appeared Bellarmine would move into halftime down 1-0, but the Golden Flashes drew a penalty corner with three seconds remaining.  Maria Cambra Soler sent it through as time expired.  Kent State led 2-0 at half outshooting the Knights 12-1 in the second quarter.

Kent State got off to a quick start in the second half, using another Jersey Hasenbos goal to take a 3-0 advantage.  Maria Soler Cambra and Madison Leety would later score for the Golden Flashes, giving them a 5-0 victory.

The best scoring chance for Bellarmine came with under six minutes left in the third period when Marit van der Bend hit the cross bar on a close-range shot.

The Golden Flashes outshot the Knights 24-9, while corners favored Kent State 10-5.

Bellarmine goalie Breanna McWhorter made a pair of outstanding diving saves in the cage, racking up a total of nine on the afternoon.  Danni Swallow logged four minutes of action in cage following a yellow card issue to McWhorter.

The Knights drop to 1-9 this season and travel to Ohio on Friday for a MAC matchup with the Bobcats at 3:30 p.m.
