Hoosiers turn back Knights 3-0 in field hockey

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—The Bellarmine Knights field hockey team competed it its first true road game of the season on Monday afternoon, falling 3-0 at Indiana University.

The host Hoosiers jumped out of the gates quickly, scoring 3:33 into the game as Anna Gwiazdzinski found the back of the cage.  Indiana then added a second goal in the opening quarter as Kira Curland scored her third goal of the season.

The second and third quarters were both scoreless, but the Hoosiers' Curland added a goal late in the fourth quarter to make the final 3-0.

Bellarmine, which fell to 1-2 on the season, got off just two shots with one being on target. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers (4-1) fired off 16 shots with nine being on frame.

Bellarmine Coach Devanny Boisvert said the game result may not have in the Knights' favor, but she thinks there are positive takeaways.

"Our goal this year is to close the gap (with the DI competition), and I definitely think we made a step forward today," she said. "I am so impressed with our possession and connection piece this season. It has come a long way from last spring. Our defense did a great job at getting the ball out of the circle after the initial shot. Hannah Brown made some big stops in the backfield this afternoon and assisted with generating our attack."

Boisvert added the game also showed where the Knights to improve.  "We need to do a better job at marking in the backfield and be a little smarter when attacking to be able to execute accordingly," she said.

Senior goalkeeper Breanna McWhorter added six saves to her total, giving her 193 for her career, which is seven behind Katie Lange for third place on the Bellarmine's all-time list.

Bellarmine returns to action on Friday at noon when they host UC-Davis at Trager Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville.
