LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the second time this season, Bellarmine wrestling is ready to compete in the second of back-to-back home duals. The Knights welcome another SoCon foe, Davidson, to Knights Hall on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
NOTE: The dual was pushed back an hour with the previous scheduled time at 6:00 p.m.
BU was last on the mat Sunday when they battled Gardner-Webb to the very end. Bellarmine rattled off four straight victories to take a 15-11 lead. The Knights then trailed 18-15 going into the final match, but GW locked up the win by a final of 24-15. Despite the team loss, Bellarmine split the 10 bouts and showed more signs of progress.
"We had some huge gutsy wins," Knights Head Coach
Ned Shuck said. "
Jack Parker coming back from a 6-1 deficit in the first period to secure a win was huge. He just keeps getting better and better every time out there. I love his fight. Also, the match at 141 was a barn burner early with Logan (Hoskins) putting his opponent on his back.
Parker set the tone with his opening win while
Devan Hendricks (11 wins) and
Eric Beck (nine wins) added to their team-leading victory totals.
"Devan had a really tough opponent and to win a match like that in a tie-breaker situation was awesome," Shuck explained. "Beck must have hit 20 leg attacks and finally got the match winner with short time. Again, I am proud of how tough and gritty these guys are becoming."
Cole Nance also earned a victory, moving to 10 wins on the year, putting him in second place on the team behind Hendricks.
Davidson (1-5) was picked to finish seventh out of nine teams in the SoCon pre-season poll (Bellarmine was picked eighth). The Wildcats faced steep competition early in the year, falling to Chattanooga, Rutgers, and West Virginia. Davidson recently picked up its first win with a 20-18 dual victory over Franklin & Marshall last Friday.
Friday's dual can be viewed on BU Knights Sports Network beginning at 7:00 p.m.
