LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In its second match in as many days, the Bellarmine women's tennis team lost 6-1 to Marshall on Saturday at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
The Knights were close in their no. 1 and no. 3 doubles matches, but the teams of Ekaterina Tikhono/
Madison Devillez and
Channing Varnum/
Ashley Jonathan each fell 6-4.
In singles, Tikhono was playing for her third consecutive victory in the no. 1 spot to start the season, but the star freshman lost in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) to Emma Vanderheyden. The lone point of the day came from junior
Maja Kozerski in the no. 6 singles slot. Kozerski corralled her first Division I victory, beating Kylie Fisher 6-0, 6-2.
"Marshall is a good team and is talented up and down the lineup," Knights Head Coach
Brian Slack said. "They came out today and controlled the point from first to last. We did a good job finding a way at no. 1 and no. 3 doubles to stay in the match and give ourselves a chance. In singles, we competed hard and had some opportunities to make the scores a little closer than the final. We will continue to work to get better each match. We play a talented Murray State team next Sunday at home."
Murray State is the third home match for the Knights in their first four of the 2022 season. Action on Jan. 28 begins at 11:00 a.m. at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
