LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team is expected to face its most formidable challenge yet in ASUN action when the Knights square off with Florida Gulf Coast University at 4 p.m. (ET) Saturday in Fort Myers.
Undefeated in league play, and with a single blemish overall, FGCU (18-1, 7-0 ASUN) is ranked No. 20 in the WBCA poll and is receiving votes in the Associated Press top 25 poll, where the Eagles are ostensibly ranked No. 26 after earning the most votes of teams outside of the top 25.
FGCU is the defending ASUN regular season and tournament champion. The Eagles went 16-0 in league play last season and defeated Liberty 84-62 in the ASUN Tournament finals, boosting their league high total of championships to eight.
FGCU remained undefeated in ASUN play this season with a 92-70 home win Thursday over visiting Eastern Kentucky. With reigning ASUN Player of the Year and conference leading scorer Kierstan Bell out, Tishara Morehouse erupted for 33 points. EKU was within 39-32 at halftime, but Morehouse scored 18 points in the third quarter alone to help the Eagles pull away. She's averaging 14.1 points per game.
FGCU is easily the highest-scoring team in the ASUN, averaging 82.8 points per game, roughly a dozen more than the next highest-scoring unit. The Eagles' scoring margin is 24.3. Liberty played FGCU close this season, falling just 73-69, but every other conference foe has lost by 19 points or more to the Eagles.
Bellarmine (3-15, 0-7) is playing its second straight road game against a Florida team. The Knights suffered a 64-53 loss Thursday at Stetson where they sliced an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit to seven with over one minute left before the Hatters turned them back.
Bailee Harney scored a game-high 21 points against Stetson, falling just two points short of equaling her career high. The senior guard has led Bellarmine in scoring in five of the last six games while breaking 20 points on three occasions. She's averaging 14.3 points in ASUN play, nearly six more than her nearest teammate.
Lucy Robertson had one of her best games of the season against the Hatters. The sophomore forward scored in double figures for the third time this season with 10 points and her six rebounds marked her second-biggest output of the year. Senior guard
Kathleen Scott added five steals, which was just one shy of her career high.
