Men's soccer delves back into ASUN road play with contest at North Florida

10/14/2022 8:21:00 AM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will make a rare October road appearance as the Knights will face North Florida at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday in ASUN action in Jacksonville, Florida.

Six of seven games in October for Bellarmine (6-3-2, 2-2-1 ASUN) are in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. The Knights preceded the contest against North Florida (2-6-2, 1-2-1) with three home games and will follow it with three more matchups in Frazier Stadium.

Bellarmine's previous ASUN road trip was also to the Sunshine State, as the Knights defeated Jacksonville 1-0 on Sept. 24 in Florida. Bellarmine and North Florida have met once in the Division-I era, with the Knights capturing a 2-1 victory in double overtime last season in Louisville on Nolan McGrath's golden goal.

Bellarmine is fourth in the ASUN with seven points, while North Florida is seventh with four. Right now, there is an imbalance in the league with conference games played up to this point. The Ospreys are among five ASUN teams with four league games left; the Knights are among four squads with three conference matches remaining. Six teams earn bids to the ASUN Tournament.

North Florida is on a four-game unbeaten streak. The Ospreys' last two matches were in ASUN play and resulted in a 1-0 win over Queens and a scoreless tie with FGCU. Before that, they defeated Florida Atlantic 1-0 and drew 2-2 with Mercer in nonconference matchups. Joaquin Acuna leads UNF with two goals.

Bellarmine is on a five-game unbeaten streak, which started with four straight wins, and the Knights have posted five shutouts in a row. All three of those streaks are D1-era program records.

Bellarmine hasn't conceded a goal since a 1-0 loss Sept. 17 to Central Arkansas, and even that was an own goal. An opposing player hasn't scored on the Knights' defense in over a month — a pair from Liberty players were the most recent on Sept. 10.

Bellarmine's defense is second in the ASUN in shutouts (five) and third in both goals-against average (0.91) and goals allowed (10). The offense has mostly been predicated on balance, as nine different Knights have scored.
