LOUISVILLE, Ky.—In a battle of unbeatens, the visiting Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys bested Bellarmine 33-10 in a Midwest Sprint Football League game on Saturday afternoon at St. Xavier High School's Brother Thomas Page More Stadium.
The host Knights started the game on the right foot—literally off the right foot of place kicker
Ben Valle. After Bellarmine took the opening kickoff and marched 52 yards to the SMWC eight yard line, the drive stalled, and Valle booted a 25-yard field goal to give the Knights an early 3-0 advantage.
However, the Pomeroys answered on their first possession, needing just five plays to go 59 yards in a drive that culminated in a 5-yard touchdown strike from Brennon Landry to Devron Johnson. The extra point try was unsuccessful, so the Knights trailed just 3-6.
The fast-moving first quarter kept producing points. After each team forced a turnover by way of an interception, The Knights were able to punch the ball into the endzone to retake the lead on a 9-yard pass play from
Dylan Gough to
Brenden Reid with just 48 seconds remaining in the opening period. Valle's extra point gave Bellarmine a 10-6 advantage.
Unfortunately for the home team, once the game moved beyond the opening 15 minutes, the next 45 were ruled by the visitors. The only score of the second period was an SMWC touchdown, so the Pomeroys went into halftime with a 13-10 advantage.
The momentum stayed with SMWC in the second half as the Pomeroys' passing game really started clicking. The visitors piled up three second half touchdowns while holding Bellarmine scoreless.
"I thought we had too many mistakes on both sides of the ball," said Bellarmine Coach
Harold Davis. "Some big plays got us on defense, and offensively we didn't execute well enough to sustain drives. But, I have to give St. Mary's a lot of credit. They are a well-coached, physical team."
Final statistics reveal advantages for the Pomeroys in nearly every category. The visitors outgained the Knights 398 to 249 in total offense, including a 90-yard advantage in the passing game 59 yards on the ground.
Individually, SMWC's Landry completed 21 of 30 attempts for 236 yards and two touchdowns while Patrick Perea picked up 103 yards on the ground for the Pomeroys. For Bellarmine, Gough connected on 20 of his 37 attempts for 148 yards and one touchdown, and Brendan Reid was the leading rusher for the Knights with 97 yards.
Defensively, Trey Jackson of SMWC was the game's leading tackler making 10 stops (nine solo) while Reid led Bellarmine with nine (five solo, four assists).
Bellarmine is back home again next week when the Knights host Midway for the second time this season. In the inaugural game for both teams, the Knights pulled out a 17-15 win as Valle connected on a 33-yard field goal with just 44 seconds remaining.
"We will work toward correcting today's mistakes and start preparing for next week's game gainst Midway," Davis said.
