Game Recap: Field Hockey | | John Spugnardi

Knights roll past Royals 5-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine field hockey team got offensive contributions from many different players and rode that balanced scoring to a 5-0 win over Queens today at Trager Stadium as the Knights post their largest victory margin in the D1 era.

Officially, the game-winning goal came just 5:26 into the contest when Amber Hofenk Jerembo took Bente Moormann's penalty corner insert just outside the circle, took one dribble and drilled a shot from the top of the circle. It was her ninth goal of the year and put Bellarmine up for good.

The Knights were far from finished, however, and just three minutes later Anna Crump finished off a pass from Marit Vander Bend for her first goal of the season.

Bellarmine added another goal just before the half.  This time, it was Moormann hitting the back of the cage for the first time this year. After intercepting an attempted clear by Queens out of the Bellarmine circle, Moorman rifled a shot that found the left side of the goal to give the Knights a 3-0 at the intermission.

After the break, the Knights tacked on one goal in each of the final two quarters.  Crump registered her second goal of the game on a third quarter penalty corner, taking the insert from Peyton Hobson and ripping a shot from the top of the circle for the score.  Hobson then finished off the day's scoring in the fourth period, when she rebounded a save by the Queens goalkeeper and notched her first goal of the season.

"It was a total team effort today—from the defensive to the attacking end," said Bellarmine Coach Devanny Boisvert. "I was happy with our passing patterns and how quickly we were able to generate our attack.  I think it says a lot about our team and how we competed today with the quick turnaround for yesterday's game against Longwood."

Bellarmine's solid play on both ends of the field shows up the stat sheet.  On the day, the Knights outshot Queens 22-6 on the day while earning eight penalty corners to just two for Queens.

"Scoring five goals and earning a shutout is incredible," Boisvert said.  I need to give a shout out to our defense and goalies Danni Swallow and Kailey Workman for their work, and kudos to multiple players getting assists and goals on the day.  It was a great weekend for Bellarmine field hockey and ended with two wins."

Bellarmine improves to 3-8 on the season while the Royals—who are in their first year of transitioning to Division I from Division II—fall to 0-8.

Prior to today's game, the Bellarmine Field Hockey team paid tribute to many of the players' favorite teaches and administrators with Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day. To view photos of the pregame ceremony, click here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/h29yrv4TW6ZFinMW8

The Knights return to action on Friday, Oct. 7 with a Mid-American Conference game at Appalachian State.
