Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Schoemehl's second-half goal propels men's soccer to 1-0 win over FGCU

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Brendan Schoemehl couldn't have picked a more opportune time to be Johnny on the spot.

On Sunday night in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the sophomore midfielder scored his first career goal in helping lift the Bellarmine University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over FGCU in ASUN action.

Senior defender Jackson Kirn collected his first career assist for Bellarmine (5-3-1, 2-2 ASUN), which notched its second consecutive victory in league play and third straight triumph overall. The Knights have also posted three shutouts in a row after the clean sheet against FGCU (4-2-2, 1-1-1).

With the match scoreless in the second half, Schoemehl was in the right place at the right time in the 71st minute. Kirn essentially won a jump ball at the 6 with FGCU's goalkeeper, rising up with him on a service and getting a head on the ball before the goalie could corral it.

It deflected back to Schoemehl, who was just steps away, and he quickly poked a shot into the open net for a 1-0 lead.

From there, Bellarmine's defense held up against FGCU's attack. Six of FGCU's 10 shots came in the second half.

Both of Bellarmine senior goalkeeper Matthew Brozovich's saves were high in difficulty. Kirn made a defensive save on a service that would have landed in the net if he hadn't cleared it.

FGCU finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots, including 3-2 on goal. The Eagles had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Bellarmine will host former Division II and GLVC rival Southern Indiana at 7 p.m. (ET) Tuesday.
