Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer notches 2-0 victory over USI for 4th win in a row

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The majority of the Bellarmine University men's soccer team didn't have direct knowledge of the storied rivalry with Southern Indiana, but you wouldn't have known that Tuesday night in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Playing on a single day's rest, Bellarmine scored a pair of second-half goals after a slew of near misses in the opening stanza en route to a commanding 2-0 win over the Screaming Eagles in nonconference action.

Senior midfielder Camden Dunne and senior defender Jackson Kirn both scored on the back end of corner kicks for Bellarmine (6-3-1), which set a new Division-I era program record with its fourth win in a row. Junior midfielder Jack Fischer and senior midfielder Rahim Shalash collected assists against the Screaming Eagles (1-8-2).

Bellarmine and Southern Indiana reignited a rivalry that had ended briefly after 2019 when the Knights transitioned from D2's Great Lakes Valley Conference to D1's ASUN Conference. USI made the jump to D1 this season, and the two programs immediately picked up where they left off, only now in the NCAA's highest level.

Bellarmine controlled the match and rarely lost its grip even when the Knights could have let frustration sink in after their barrage of shots through three-quarters of the match all came up empty. Bellarmine entered halftime with a 13-0 advantage in shots, but the contest nonetheless was scoreless at the break.

Ultimately, corner kicks — and perhaps Bellarmine's relentlessness — proved to be the difference. In the 67th minute, Dunne headed a Fischer corner kick through traffic and inside the far post for a 1-0 lead. It was his first goal of the season — and proved to be the game-winner — while Fischer notched his third assist.

Bellarmine capitalized on another set piece in the 74th minute. Kirn, parallel to the back post, drove in a header off a corner kick from Shalash to boost the lead to 2-0. It was his first career goal and the first career assist for Shalash.

Bellarmine's defense registered its fourth straight shutout, which is also a D1-era program record. Freshman Alex Lindewirth earned the clean sheet in goal and had a pair of saves. It was the rookie's second shutout in two starts.

Even though Bellarmine scored both its goals in the second half, the match was more balanced in the latter portion of the contest. Southern Indiana managed all 10 of its shots after the intermission, although the Knights added 12 more attempts themselves and finished with a 25-10 superiority, including 12-2 on frame.

In addition, Bellarmine had a 13-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Knights kept USI goalkeeper Alec Meissner busy all night, and he was often up to the challenge while amassing 10 saves.

Bellarmine returns to ASUN action by hosting Stetson at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
