Field hockey concludes 2022 season with 3-1 loss at Saint Francis

LORETTO, Penn. – The Bellarmine field hockey team ended its season at Saint Francis University on Sunday with a 3-1 loss to the Red Flash.

The Knights (4-15, 2-5 MAC) matched their win total and conference record from last season.

Sunday's contest started strong for the Knights, as Marit van der Bend scored the first goal just 10 minutes into the game.  van der Bend was able to gather control of the ball during a scrum just in front of the cage, and fired it home to give Bellarmine a 1-0 advantage.

Despite a pair of penalty corners in the second period, Bellarmine was unable to tally another goal.  And approximately four minutes into the second quarter, Saint Francis evened the match.  Carysse Norris scored off a feed from Chloe Butz to make it a 1-1 score.

The Red Flash rolled that momentum into the start of the second half as they scored less than two minutes into the third quarter. On the second of two penalty corners in a row, Ella Maille found the back of the cage to push Saint Francis ahead 2-1.  Eugenia Kenny added the final goal of the match for SFU later in the third period.

Bellarmine was able to generate six shots in the second half, holding a 6-2 edge in shots in the final two periods, but the Knights did not cash in.  Overall, Bellarmine out-shots Saint Francis 11-7 (8-5 SOG) and held a 6-5 edge in penalty corners.

Anna Crump tallied a team-best four shots and three shots on goal, while Amber Hofenk Jerembo and Peyton Hobson each put two shots on goal.  Goalkeeper Kailey Workman made two saves in cage.

For the season, Hofenk Jerembo led Bellarmine in scoring with a career-best 12 goals and racked up 29 SOG.  Marit van der Bend ranked second in points 14 thanks to five goals and four assists.  Crump scored four goals and added three assists this season, while Hobson produced a team-best five assists.  On the defensive side, Grace Dukes ranked top-five in the country with a career-high eight defensive saves.
