LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After coming so close so many times to tasting victory this season, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team drained its metaphorical cup Thursday night in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Leaving no doubt about a successful outcome, Bellarmine rolled to a 3-0 triumph over Stetson in ASUN action as
Paul Babba earned his first win as head coach of the Knights.
Freshman midfielder
Alexa Orozco and senior defender
Sarah Kraus found the net for Bellarmine (1-4-8, 1-1-4 ASUN), which secured its first conference win. Senior midfielder
Zenia Nava notched an assist against Stetson (5-7-1, 2-2-1).
Bellarmine's three goals tied a Division I-era program record, equaling its tally in a 3-2 home victory last season over Chicago State. It was a much-needed outburst as the Knights were coming off four straight shutouts, although they did collect three draws in that span.
Bellarmine's first goal Thursday came early in the contest. The aggressor from the outset, the Knights were rewarded with four corner kicks in a little over 10 minutes to start the match. They converted on the last of that cluster, as Orozco rammed in Nava's corner kick with a header in the 11th minute for her third goal of the season.
Bellarmine boosted the lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute. Stetson was called for a handball in the box, and Kraus laced her penalty kick attempt into the net for her first career goal.
Things were going so well that Bellarmine was the recipient of a Stetson own goal in the second half. In the 59th minute, a Hatters defender mishit a clear attempt on a header off a Nava free kick, and it looped over the goalkeeper and inside the far post for a 3-0 lead.
Bellarmine's defense racked up its seventh shutout and was particularly impenetrable in the first half, when the Knights didn't allow Stetson a single shot attempt. The Knights have amassed four clean sheets in the last five games.
Senior goalkeeper
Elyssa Francis amassed her fifth shutout of the season and 33rd of her career, which is two shy of tying the program record. She tallied two saves.
Bellarmine finished with a 9-7 advantage in shots, including 5-2 on frame, and a 9-0 superiority in corner kicks.
Bellarmine will host FGCU at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday. It's the Knights' Senior Day.
