Knights grind out sweep of Royals with pair of comeback set wins

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Two impressive comeback wins in the first two sets propelled the Bellarmine volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Queens University of Charlotte in an ASUN Conference match in Knights Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Down 23-19 in the first set, the Knights unleashed a 6-0 run to steal the opening set 25-23.  Then in the second stanza, the visiting Royals built an 18-12 advantage only to see the Knights storm back once again. Coming the stretch, Bellarmine relied on the strong right arm of senior Jayme Scott, who put down five kills as the Knights rallied to take the second set by the same 25-23 score.

The third set played a little more traditionally, as the Knights slowly built a 19-12 advantage before closing out Queens 25-18 to earn the sweep.

"I love the determination we showed when battling back in the first two sets," said Bellarmine Coach Rick Nold. "It would have been really easy to get frustrated with how things were going, but we kept grinding and then finished strong in the third set.  I'm really proud of our whole group."

Scott finished with 19 kills to lead all hitters, and her .350 hitting percentage represented the fourth-best effort of the season for the ASUN kills leader.

Bellarmine setter Emily Arnold also turned in a solid performance, running the offense that hit at a .246 clip while recording a double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs.  Freshman Kylie VanHoy just missed her second double-double of the week with her nine-kill, 15-dig performance, and classmate Gabby Brissett also came up big for the Knights, hitting .500 and recording 10 kills.

Defensively, Bellarmine out-dug the Royals 71-54, led by Anna Lococo's 19 digs, and limited the Queens offense to a .167 hitting percentage.

For the visiting Royals, Alleigh Johnson was the primary offensive weapon, ringing up 16 kills while hitting .333.  She also ended the match as the top Queens defender as well, totaling 21 digs and adding a block assist.

Bellarmine improves to 8-10 on the season and ups its ASUN record to 2-4.  Queens, which is making the transition from Division II to Division I this year, falls to 5-14, 0-6 ASUN.

The Knights return to action on Friday, when they'll visit Kennesaw State.
