Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Jack Kizer

Bellarmine offense continues to roll, field hockey tops Davidson on the road

DAVIDSON, N.C.— Bellarmine field hockey delivered its second-highest scoring performance of the season and wrapped up the weekend with a 4-3 non-conference win at Davidson on Sunday afternoon.

Last week, the Knights (4-9, 2-2 MAC) scored a season-best five goals against Queens.  On Sunday, the Knights offense came to play again, scoring three of their four goals in the first half.

"It was nice to rebound from Friday's game against App State and get a W today," Knights Head Coach Devanny Boisvert said.  "Obviously, we were a little tired from the double OT game, but we dug deep to end the weekend on a positive note."

After a Davidson penalty corner about 11 minutes into the match, Amber Hofenk Jerembo streaked up the far sideline.  She threaded a pass all the way into the circle for Marit van der Bend, who spun to left and fired a shot into the goal.  van der bend's goal was her fourth of the season, while the assist was Hofenk Jerembo's first this year.

Both teams were held scoreless the remainder of the first quarter, and Davidson eventually tied the game six minutes into the second period with a Bella Worthington goal.

Bellarmine showed resilience, however, answering within two minutes.  The Knights earned three straight penalty corners, and their third shot on goal in the sequence finally went through.  From the top of the circle, Hofenk Jerembo scooted to her right and blasted a laser into the cage to give Bellarmine a 2-1 edge.  Peyton Hobson was credited with the assist, her team-best fourth of the season.

The scoring certainly was not done there in the first half – at the 27 minute mark, Davidson's Charlie Kabelac tied the game 2-2 off a penalty corner.

The theme of quick responses in the first half continued, however, and Bellarmine retook the lead less than a minute later.  The Knights generated another corner and executed perfectly.  Instead of firing a shot from the top of the circle, Anna Crump sent a pass to Hofenk Jerembo who on the right wing.  From a similar spot as her previous goal, Hofenk Jerembo hit another bullet and scored her second goal of the day.  Hofenk Jerembo's goals were the 10th and 11th goals of the season thus far.

The second half scoring lightened up, at least in the third quarter.  Neither team scored in the third period or first five minutes of the fourth period.   At the 50-minute mark, however, Bellarmine took advantage of a penalty corner for the third time.  Crump laced a shot from the top of the circle, and Isabel Gladys tipped it in from just right of the goal.  The goal was Gladys' second of the season, and the assist was Crump's second of the day.

That insurance goal proved important for Bellarmine as Sarah Minges scored with less than five minutes left for the Wildcats to make it a 4-3 game.  Davidson went empty net for the final four minutes but was unable to get off a shot, and Bellarmine locked up the win.

"Our attacking corners were really sharp today, and I was happy to see us earn nine of them," Boisvert added.  "Our team and individual defense struggled a little today, but it gives us some areas of improvement for this upcoming week.  I was proud to see this team pull together when the game got a little chaotic.  We also have matched the number of wins from last season and are excited about the continuining progress of Bellarmine field hockey."

Davidson held a 16-14 advantage in shots for the game, but shots on goal were even 10-10.  The Wildcats also had a 12-9 edge in penalty corners, but Bellarmine converted on three of its corner chances.

Danni Swallow started the first half in goal for the Knights and made three saves, while Kailey Workman played the final 30 minutes and made four saves.

The Knights return home next weekend with matches against Ball State on Friday and Duke on Sunday at Trager Stadium.
