LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It was as if it was meant to be.
On Monday night, in a return to the arena where he had captured so many victories and made so many indelible memories as the head coach of the Bellarmine University men's basketball team,
Scott Davenport reached another milestone in his unparalleled career with the Knights.
With Freedom Hall unavailable, Bellarmine took the floor in Knights Hall for the first time since the 2019-20 campaign, and the Knights delivered a vintage performance, rolling to an 86-46 victory over Campbellsville-Harrodsburg to deliver Davenport the 400th win of his career.
"I had no idea until I was asked about it. No clue," Davenport said of the milestone. "It is the definition of a program. The paychecks are not about what goes in the bank, they're emotional paychecks. The student body, the community — it was incredible."
Before transitioning to Division I and moving into Freedom Hall in 2020-21, Knights Hall had been Bellarmine's home court since 1960. Under Davenport, Bellarmine captured Midwest Region titles in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2017 in Knights Hall, victories that propelled the Knights into the Elite Eight of the NCAA II Tournament and triumphs that all led to Final Four appearances, including the 2011 national championship run.
Bellarmine (2-1) clearly embraced the nostalgic night and the opportunity to imprint another landmark win on Davenport's coaching ledger. The Knights built a 48-23 lead over Campbellsville-Harrodsburg by halftime and followed by outscoring the Pioneers 38-23 in the second half.
"We needed a game like this from a health standpoint, a conditioning standpoint and a confidence standpoint," Davenport said. "We played three games in six days with a tough trip in the middle. If you learn from it, it helps you."
The numbers were classic Bellarmine under Davenport's tutelage. The Knights made 57.1 percent of their shots behind high-quality looks created from restless ball movement and cutting. Bellarmine collected assists on 24 of its 32 made baskets. The Knights limited the Pioneers to 36.2-percent shooting and outrebounded them 38-22.
After scoring a team-best 24 points Saturday at Morehead State, freshman guard
Peter Suder impressed once again, pouring in a game-high 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Sophomore forward
Curt Hopf hit 5-of-6 shots in scoring 14 points, and freshman guard
Ben Johnson drained a trio of 3-pointers in chipping in 12 points.
Contributions came from plenty of sources. Eleven Knights scored, 11 grabbed at least one rebound and 10 dished out at least one assist. Sophomore forward
Langdon Hatton hauled in a game-high seven rebounds, while senior guard
Garrett Tipton distributed a game-best five assists.
"The 24 assists are probably the highlight of the night," Davenport said.
Suder spotted Tipton for a layup to open the scoring and followed with a 3-pointer that gave Bellarmine the lead for good less than one minute into the contest. A Hopf 3-pointer and baskets by Tipton and senior guard
Bash Wieland off feeds from senior guards
Juston Betz and
Alec Pfriem boosted the advantage to 17-2 as win No. 400 for Davenport was never in doubt.
Bellarmine will play at 7 p.m. (ET) Friday at Clemson. The Knights will then play at 8:30 p.m. Monday at Duke.
